Skomantas is actually the pseudonym for a group of Lithuanian writers led by Juozas Almenis, who is a retired professor living in the United States.
The Tales of the Baltic book series tell the adventures of the five children of the Samogitian thane Žybartas and his priestess wife Medeina. Their children are: Daubaras, Junda, Uvis, Einius and Gailė, although most of the books are about Uvis.
The stories not only encompass the various regions of ancient Lithuania, but also the lands of Latvia, Russia and other nations with which the tribes of Lithuania and Samogitia in the 13th century used to fight and trade with.

Teutonų Belaisvis (Captive of the Teutons)
A Samogitian boy, ten-year-old Uvis, is kidnapped by the Teuton knights while hunting in the woods with his brother. While in captivity, Uvis works as a slave in the home of a Kertze, a candle-maker. Later the boy is sold to a travelling circus and together with them leaves Riga.

Pelkių Vilkė (The Fen Wolf)
After a series of adventures, Uvis manages to escape captivity and the knights of Bishop Albert, who are now pursuing him. While he takes shelter in the safety of a swamp, Uvis adopts a wolf cub. When the wolf frows up, together they make the long journey home to Samogitia.

Atpildo Strėlė (Arrow of Revenge or Blood Wedding)
Junda, the sister of Uvis, is about to be married to Tolvaikis, the son of a Lithuanian thane. However, his mother is a fanatic Orthodox Russian. Her hatred for her pagan soon-to-be daughter-in-law leads her to a union with the Knights of the Sword, who plan to murder all the pagan guests on the day of the wedding.

The conflict begun in Užkeiktas Lobis continues. Uvis and his friend have finally managed to find the treasure of Žvelgote and they have shipped it down Dauguva river to Koknesse, where Medeina and Gaile are imprisoned.

This book relates a struggle of succession when an old thane dies. In desperation, his evil son fakes a sign from the gods, which supposedly guarantees that he will become the new ruler. The blacksmith of Vente castle, Kernis, together with Uvis travels to Riga on the quest to discover how the Knights of the Order manage to succesfully smith iron into strong weapons, a secret then unknown to the Lithuanians and Samogitians.

Jundos Lemtis (Junda's Destiny)
This book continues the story of Junda and how she was blessed by the gods, who had given her the power of never missing the mark while shooting an arrow. While on a journey to sacred Šventaragis Valley to ask the gods to take away her gift, Junda and several of her family members are kidnapped by Marfa, the vengeful mother of Tolvaikis, Junda’s murdered husband.

This book is about the battles between the Samogitians and Teutons. During one battle, the knights destroy the castle of Daugavgryva, which is the home of Uvis friend, Zervis. Together, they try to regain his homeland.

Thane Žybartas youngest son Einius decides to become a trader, and thus we follow him through his adventures in Riga and Tallinn. At the same time, he unwillingly becomes involved in the battles that are now taking place due to Pope Gregory’s IX efforts at taking power in Livonia.

Šiaulių Mūšis (Battle of Šiauliai)
This book is about one of the most famous battles in Lithuanian history. It took place in the autumn of 1236 and this battle has been known through the ages as the Battle of Šiauliai (after a nearby city), or more often, as the Battle of the Sun.
